Got stress? Try Tai Chi!

03, 2009.

Wearing T-shirts and soft pants, classmates stand perfectly still, feet together, performing wu ji, the opening position. Then, following Coach Jose, they fluidly move into the "commencing," with feet separated, hands raised, knees bent. So goes the beginning of a tai chi class taught by Jose Johnson, owner of Jose Johnson's Chinese Martial Arts and Wellness Center in Susquehanna Twp. After a brief warmup with Coach Julie, the class is ready to perform the flowing intricate movements that make up tai chi. Tai chi, as it is practiced in the West, can best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of forms that consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are derived from the martial arts, although the way they are performed in tai chi is slowly, softly and gracefully, with smooth and even transitions inbetween. The focus required for the movements is especially good for relieving stress. In fact, tai chi is popular right now because the practice has been clinically shown to improve balance, blood pressure and general stress levels, Johnson said. Tai chi is more than movement, however. "It is a life philosophy," says Johnson. So along with the exercise, Johnson imparts life's lessons from his 20 years of experience, both in the United States and China. "Don't get stressed out because you're not getting the choreography," he tells the class, filled with men and women of varying experience levels. "The world gets better if we get better...one person at a time." On this night, the group breaks into pairs and practices pushing on each other's abdomens with the backs of their hands. The exercise, according to Johnson, deals with the idea of how one interprets things. "A student's first thought will be, 'My God, I'm going to fall over.' But by not resisting the push, by allowing it to go through the body down to the foot and into the ground, one turns a negative into a positive," Johnson said. "You can always choose your response -- stand or yield -- by maintaining your center," Johnson said. "You control the circumstances. Don't allow little things to get in the way. "The benefits are so varied, you get what you want to get out of it," Johnson said. Tai chi is "a philosophy of balancing extremes. It can benefit anyone, physically or mentally." Kim Loper of Susquehanna Twp., is particularly excited on this night because, as a relative newcomer, she is moving up from a half hour workout to an hour. She had decided to try tai chi because she was looking for an exercise that would accommodate her health limitations. Loper has a muscle ailment called myasthenia gravis, which means she can't run or lift weights. She also has arthritis, and it was the Arthritis Foundation that recommended the gentler tai chi. So far, she is finding more mobility. Tai chi allows her and other participants to "adjust moves to what we can do," she said. She also appreciates Coach Jose's words of wisdom. "They make you think a little more." And she says tai chi can't be beat for stress relief. "I find when I'm doing the movements in front of the mirror, it's almost meditative. I block out everything else. It's just me and the coach and that's it." Jim Doyle, owner of Nature's Way Nursery in Lower Paxton Twp., has been doing tai chi for eight months for body awareness and stress."To me, it makes me focus on just the moment ... of what's in front of me. I forget the troubles of the day." He said the practice helps him concentrate more fully, which makes him relax. He has slightly elevated blood pressure, but fish oil capsules and tai chi are all he needs. Doyle is in the advanced group after such a short time, which he partly credits to 30 years of dancing experience. Yet he wants to emphasize that "anyone can do it at any age ... at any level." "I wish I would have started a long, long time ago."

BENEFITS OF TAI CHI: If you're trying to improve your general health, you may find tai chi helpful. Tai chi is generally safe for people of all ages and levels of fitness. Studies have shown that for older adults tai chi can improve balance and reduce the risk of falls. Because the movements are low impact and put minimal stress on your muscles and joints, tai chi is appealing to many older adults. For these same reasons, if you have a condition such as arthritis or you're recovering from an injury, you may find it useful. Tai chi appears to offer both physical and mental benefits no matter what your age.

It's used to: • Reduce stress • Increase flexibility • Improve muscle strength and definition • Increase energy, stamina and agility • Increase feelings of well-being Tai chi hasn't been studied scientifically until recently. Preliminary research shows that for older adults, in particular, practicing tai chi regularly may: • Reduce anxiety and depression • Improve balance and coordination, reducing the number of falls • Improve sleep quality, such as staying asleep longer at night and feeling more alert during the day • Slow bone loss in women following menopause • Reduce high blood pressure • Improve cardiovascular fitness • Relieve chronic pain • Improve everyday physical functioning.
